Her parents are the grandmother and daughter of actors Gene Lockhart, as well as actor June Lockhart. Her career began in a young age. Her first appearance came at age four when she appeared in T is for Tumbleweed. It was nominated as an Oscar Award for the short film. She would spend time working on set alongside her mother so she was able to learn the finer points of running a business. Lockhart also appeared in numerous Lassie episodes. Her first movie is Dora in Jory in 1972. She played Joan Crawford's daughter as a character in The Sixth Sense, a 1972 TV series. The show was Joan's final acting performance. It is believed that Anne did not want to be Laurie Strode, the character that John Carpenter created in his 1978 horror film Halloween. The part was given to Jaime Lee Curtis. Carpenter states that the actress declined his invitation to perform the role of Laurie Strode. Anne did not recall being contacted by John Carpenter nor being offered the position. It is possible that one of her representatives refused the part for her, but without informing her. Glen Larson, who had provided a draft script for the role she was to play in the TV production Battlestar Galactica from 1978, was initially selected for the role. The character was not strong enough to warrant her acceptance of the role. Glen then wrote her to play a more strong character in Sheba. She accepted the Living Legend script after reading the first 25 pages. The program ran for one episode. She co-starred with Desi Arnaz Jr. (son of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball) Melanie Griffith and Robert Carradine in the movie Joyride (1977) and co-starred together with Michael Moriarty in the horror movie The Dark Tower (1987).
